And On It Goes

Into week 5, or is it 6 already, and week 4 of placement! 4 assignments down (soon to be 6), 4 lessons written up, 2 for tomorrow.

The VIT Readiness to Teach document was a big, seemingly pointless task, although at the end of it, I feel I have some direction for this year, and have made some goals for myself with my placement. First of all I plan to collect some real evidence of my presence in classrooms, something I have not really done over the past 3 years, and second I plan to really connect with my students, as opposed to just pumping out the lessons set out for me by my mentor teacher.

The VIT box project also pointed out to me the fact that as of next year (I hope!) I will be writing reports! I've decided to write a web based app that is going to help me keep track of student progress and contain things like soft copies of assessment rubrics. Once complete, I will sell it and retire off the profits. But seriously, I plan to have it finished by the start of second semester, so I can actually put it to work in a classroom to see if it helps organise my thoughts.

Kind of looking forward to the exposition (2500 words, 3 hours) but also pretty nervous, as it sometimes takes me a long time to write!

In other news:

I've found it a little harder to get up last week, and had the longest train ride ever last Thursday.

Bec and I cleaned the house (except the study :D whoops!) and now it feels a whole lot nicer to come home to, plus there are no more kittens! (for now)

Yesterday afternoon I ripped the vines off the back fence... they were pulling it down.

Today I held a snake or two and a crocigator (I'm a teacher, don't argue).. if you're reading this, you probably followed a link from my facebook, check out the pics there.

Boston Legal makes me smile.

Watched a movie called "The Town" the other day. If you like chick flicks hiding in action movies, then that is a film for you. More guns, less sap.

Happy Birthday to Cate for last Friday :D! I'm next... 26 in a few weeks!

For my creative arts subject, I'm writing a short score for the final battle scene in "Saving Private Ryan" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twS9UtJaw7s

That's pretty much it.

Cheers for reading

Let's get ready to rumble

Let me start by saying, thanks for reading. One reads of wonder stories of how writing in a diary or blogging can change your entire life. Well, here's hoping that it at least helps keep me on track.

This year I am tackling uni head on. Yesterday I quit my job, and tomorrow morning I am throwing myself at the mercy of centrelink to provide my wife and I with enough money to get through this year.

"Why does that young man need to tackle uni head on?" you ask, disbelief flashing across your face.. it is because last year, I did not try hard enough. My focus was on anything except my studies, and as a result I am now playing catchup.

This semester I am going to pass seven subjects. Most of my friends are going to pass four, as that is all that is required in one semester. I plan on passing these subjects with decent grades as well.

I have planned out my semester with no timetable clashes, I have my placement organised at a local primary school where I am teaching a lovely grade two class, and I am going to do well.

I have around 23 assignments spread out over the semester, and I have heard (but never confirmed) that each subject has 3000 words of assessment (or equivalent), leaving me a grand total of somewhere around 21000 words of assessment. Woohoo!

This blog is to help me keep focused, and sort of talk out my ideas to myself, while you watch in stunned amazement, at how Mr. ISuckedAtThirdYear completes his degree at the end of this year, and gets employment in a school next year.

For now, I am off to write evaluations on a PMP program that myself and a collegue ran today, and to fill out the VIT (Victorian Institute of Teaching) Readiness to Teach matrix.
